The Nourishing Dessert: Elaneer Payasam (Tender Coconut Kheer)

Introduction:

This drink is offered as a naivedyam to Goddess Durga. The Payasam (Pudding) is an interesting one, for it follows the principles as enshrined by practitioners of naturopathy. This is made and offered without using fire.

Ingredients:

  1. Elaneer (Tender coconut water) – 700 ml.
  2. Tender coconut (Cut into pieces) – 3 cups
  3. Banana (Ripened, any variety) – 3 nos.
  4. Cardamom – ½ tsp.
  5. Cane sugar or honey (Optional) – 2 tbsp.
  6. Betel leaves (With stalks removed) – 4 nos.

Procedure:

Cut the bananas and transfer this to a mixie jar. Add the tender coconut pieces and the betel leaves. Grind all the three to a fine paste. Add this mixture to elaneer and mix thoroughly. Serve this nourishing drink to your family.

Elaneer payasam can be used as a mid-morning drink instead of coffee and tea. Substitute this drink for lunch. This is a detoxifying and cleansing drink. It serves as a weight-loss drink. The flavour of the elaneer payasam can be enhanced by adding a pinch of nutmeg powder to it.

Enjoy the fresh, healthy, relishing payasam!
