Where a rhythmic cadence of music blends seamlessly with the structured world of auditing, we found Mukund Swaminathan, a 26-year-old maestro who has effortlessly blended these seemingly disparate domains.
Mukund's journey began in the quaint city of Coimbatore, where his tryst with music started at a tender age, accompanying his elder sister to Carnatic music classes. What began as playful accompaniment soon transformed into a fervent passion, ignited by the sight of his sister on television during a reality show audition. This sparked a desire in young Mukund, leading him to embark on a remarkable journey through various singing competitions.
Mukund’s first foray into the limelight was with Little Masters on Jaya TV, where he showcased his singing prowess and stage presence, reaching the top 7 in its second season. This early success cemented his passion for music and set the stage for his future endeavors. Mukund's melodious voice then graced the stage of Ragamalika, captivating the audience and judges alike. His performance earned him the prestigious Best Entertainer award and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform before the legendary Dr. Balamuralikrishna, which Mr. Mukund considers a significant milestone in his music journey.
His pursuit of musical excellence continued with Sun TV's singing reality show, where he was mentored by playback singer Smt Sunitha Sarathy. Under her guidance, Mukund further refined his skills and stagecraft, delivering consistently impressive performances. Mukund's talent shone brightly in Super Singer Junior 3, where he secured a spot in the top 15, proving his ability to compete at a high level and captivating audiences with his unique vocal style.
Along this incredible journey, Mukund had the privilege of learning from revered gurus like Smt Hemalatha Mohan, Shri SV Subramanian, Smt Indu and Smt Bhuvaneswari Chandrasekar. He fondly recalls his Super Singer T20 experience as a turning point, expanding his musical horizons and enabling him to embrace diverse genres. “Super Singer T20 changed my approach towards music. It helped to explore and adapt to different genres.”
Mukund's exceptional talent even led him to the auditions of Indian Idol, where he impressed renowned judges like Shreya Ghoshal, Vishal, and Shekhar with his renditions of "Mitwa" and "Devi Neeye Thunai."
Despite his musical achievements, Mukund chose to focus on academics during his 10th standard, achieving an outstanding 97.4%. He pursued commerce at GD matriculation in Coimbatore, where he continued to nurture his passion for music while being the cultural secretary of the school.
Further, Mukund started his advanced training in music under the mentorship of Prof. K. Sivaramakrishnan. Along with his dedication to music, his academic achievements remained a priority. This continued into his 12th standard, where he scored 97.25% and gained admission to both PSG College of Arts and Science and started pursuing CA. While pursuing CA, he prioritized his studies and articleship, temporarily putting music on hold. However, his love for music found an outlet through the app Smule, where he continued to express himself.
Mukund's dedication to his auditing career was truly tested during his articleship. Faced with a difficult choice between completing his final year of college and continuing his articleship, Mukund made a bold decision. The principal at his college refused to grant him permission to pursue both simultaneously, forcing him to choose between continuing college and the articleship. Ultimately, he chose to prioritize his articleship, understanding the value of the experience and the long-term benefits it offered for his future as an auditor. This decision showcased his commitment to his chosen path and his willingness to make sacrifices to achieve his goals.
Mukund's unwavering dedication led him to clear his CA Final exams in 2021, securing a coveted position at KPMG Global Services in Bangalore through campus placement. Alongside his professional endeavors, he pursued CFA, successfully clearing Level 1 in June 2023.
In 2024, Mukund's musical journey took an unexpected turn when he was invited to sing in a prestigious YouTube series by Ragamalika TV. His renditions of “Vadikkai Marandhadhum Yeno” and “Yen Sirithai Ennai Paarthu” garnered significant views and appreciation. One of his ardent admirers, Dharanendra Momaya, aptly describes the magic of Mukund's voice, 'Mukund's voice has a unique tonal quality (timbre). It is magic.'
Throughout his journey, Mukund has been fortunate to have a strong support system. He expresses gratitude for his parents and sister, who have consistently encouraged his passion for music and academics. He also acknowledges the influence of his friends, who inspired him to excel in his studies. Mukund fondly remembers his music teachers, particularly Prof. K. Sivaramakrishnan, who played a pivotal role in shaping his musical abilities. He also extends his thanks to Dharanendra Momaya for the opportunity to be featured in the magazine. Mukund recognizes that his success is a result of the collective support and encouragement he has received from these individuals.
Mukund Swaminathan's story is an inspiration to aspiring artists and professionals alike. He embodies the power of balancing multiple passions, proving that with dedication and perseverance, one can achieve excellence in seemingly contrasting fields. As he continues his journey, Mukund's melodious voice and sharp auditing skills are sure to leave an indelible mark on the world.
