Science behind Vastu & Principles of Vastu Shastra - III

Concept of Cardinal directions

Previously, we have understood the importance of the sun and the earth’s magnetic field and their direct and indirect impact on the human beings. The main logic behind almost all the rules of Vastu Shastra depends on these principles. Let us understand the concept of the cardinal directions with the help of a simple example. We are traveling, with all our belongings, along with the earth towards northeast direction constantly at a speed of 1070 miles or 1670 kilometers per hour. The forward direction is northeast, due to the inclination of the Earth. Therefore the division of the earth, the construction of the buildings and the utilization of these buildings, should not be against this motion.

For example, we have to carry a large and heavy box on a two-wheeler (scooter/bike).

a). If the box is placed in the front on the handle bar, it will reduce our speed and comfort and will also hinder our vision.

b). If the box is kept on either left or right side, it will again create a disbalance and we might fall down.

c). Therefore the only best option will be, to tie the box at the back on a carrier, so that the travel is comfortable.

Hence, this is the theory which is applied in the Vastu Rules.

The Earth is moving inclined about 23.5 degrees towards northeast direction and is rotating  on its own axis, without any rest, for billions of years. It is also revolving around the sun without any axles, bearings or motors. Therefore, the weight we keep over it, should not hinder its movement. So, we should emphasize on keeping the heavier weights in the southwest and lighter weights in northeast corner and try to balance the southeast and northwest corners with medium weight.

Another interesting example is loading a bullock cart, which runs on only two wheels. The cartman balances the cart by distributing and balancing the weight, so that it is easy and comfortable for the bullocks to pull it. The Earth is rotating and rolling towards the northeast direction, hence keeping the heavy weights in that direction would strain its movement.

To simplify and put this concept into regular practice, while designing a place, Vastu Shastra divides a place mainly into nine parts aligning with the directions:  North, East, South, West, Northeast Corner, Southeast Corner, Southwest Corner, Northwest Corner and the Center.

NINE DIVISIONS OF A LAND:

1. North, Northeast Corner, East and the Center - These are the places impacting the forward direction of the movement (like the handle bar of a motorbike). Keeping any heavy weight in these places will obstruct the movement and create discomforts. Hence, avoiding heavy weight in these areas, make the life peaceful and prosperous.

2. South, West and Southwest - Corners form the rear side of the movement. Keeping maximum weight at these places will make the travel comfortable and in harmony with the cosmic forces. Acquiring wealth and keeping it safe is an important aspect of life. For creating the free flow of finance and saving money, keeping heavy weight in these areas, in a building are advisable.

3. Northwest and Southeast -  Corners are the two sides (left and right) of the motion. We can keep lightweights in these areas and balance the movement. Northwest corner denotes the social status and the Southeast corner improves the health. By keeping balanced weight in these places improves the status and wealth of family members.

Further in our next article we will talk about the important areas of the building which should be designed in these cardinal directions for a harmonious amalgamation of the cosmic energies with our daily activities.
